Abstract

The Geological Survey of Canada has produced a hydrostratigraphic model of the South Nation watershed region, south-eastern Ontario. The model was developed under the Geological Survey of Canada's Groundwater Program in collaboration with partner agencies (e.g., South Nation Conservation Authority, Ontario Geological Survey, Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources). The model consists of a series of grid files that define the top surfaces of 7 Quaternary stratigraphic units plus bedrock. The modelled units are, stratigraphically from oldest to youngest: 1- Paleozoic bedrock, 2 - Sub-till sediment, 3 - Sandy silt till, 4 - Glaciofluvial (esker) sediment, 5 - Basin mud, 6 - Basin sand, 7 - Organic deposits, 8 - Recent deposits.

Introduction

Archival borehole log data was interpreted and reclassified into a stratigraphic database format using a rule-based expert system. Stratigraphic database contacts were combined with digital geologic map polygons using a 10 meter Digital Elevation Model as a common elevation standard. Surfaces were produced using Natural Neighbour interpolations in MapInfo Professional® with Vertical Mapper™. Database management, data analysis and programming were completed using Microsoft® Access 2003© and Visual Basic for Applications©.
A 1:50 000 scale digital compilation of geological mapping (Gao et al., 2002) served as a basis for 3D structural modelling. In addition to helping to develop a clearer understanding of the processes of subglacial and ice-contact sedimentation, cored boreholes called ""Golden Spikes"" (Sharpe et al., 2003) are important sources of reliable calibration for 19 companion seismic profiles. Numerous aggregate pits were also studied and used to develop an understanding of depositional processes and related esker architecture (Cummings et al., 2008; Cummings and Russell, 2007; Russell and Cummings, 2009). The elevations of all subsurface, mapping and survey data were standardized to a common digital elevation model (DEM) surface at 10 meter cell resolution provided by OMNR (OMNR, 2006). An extensive archival database of MOE water well records, geotechnical boreholes and municipal water source investigation borehole reports was compiled by SNCA and used to provide invaluable regional data coverage.
For the purpose of 3D modelling, 8 stratigraphic units are defined from oldest to youngest: 1) Paleozoic bedrock: Paleozoic carbonate bedrock underlying the model area. 2) Sub-till sediment: Coarse-grained sediment can be present below the regional diamicton. Often <1m in thickness, these subtill sediment packages may be laterally extensive. 3) Sandy silt till: Massive overconsolidated diamicton that drapes bedrock in the southern portion of the basin and pinches out toward the north. It has a sandy-silt till texture with sub-angular to angular clasts of predominately locally-derived carbonate mudstone. 4) Glaciofluvial (esker) sediment: Eskers were formed sub-glacially in long (<50km) stream conduits. Esker deposits, although stratigraphically younger than the regional diamicton, are largely floored by bedrock except toward their terminal outwash fans where they may overlie diamicton. 5) Basin mud: As glaciers retreated further north, a pro-glacial lake formed that eventually intermingled with marine waters forming the Champlain Sea. This inland sea remained for ~2000 years during which time thick mud (>40m) deposits accumulated. 6) Basin sand: High ground in the basin (i.e., esker tops) and sediment transported from melting glaciers were reworked by wave action to produce sandy beach deposits. 7) Organic deposits: Bog deposits. 8) Recent deposits: Alluvial and aeolian deposits.
